How do online spaces hosting gore content function, and how are they organised and constituted?
Online spaces specialising in hosting extremely violent content (“gore” videos and images) play multiple roles in violent behaviours and have broader deleterious effects on society. While existing research answers important questions, such as why people come to watch such content or what impact this exposure has on them, it falls short of fully explaining how online spaces hosting gore content actually function; that is, how they are organised and constituted.
This project aims to reveal the structure of the gore ecosystem, thereby shedding light on the digital landscape that contributes to fuelling horrific violence.
